Crisp Sandwich

The classic British butty: two slices of soft white bread, thickly buttered, packed with a bag of crisps and pressed just enough to hear them crack. Cheap, ten-second comfort food eaten everywhere from playgrounds to pub gardens.

Method

  1. Leave 10 g of salted butter out of the fridge for about 10 minutes until it is soft enough to spread without tearing the bread.
  2. Lay 2 slices of soft white bread flat on a board. Do not toast or grill them — the whole point is the contrast between soft bread and crunchy crisps.
  3. Spread the softened butter evenly over one face of each slice, taking it right into the corners so no dry bread is left; the butter also stops the crisps sliding out as you eat.
