Method

  1. Lay 2 slices of soft white sandwich bread side by side on a clean board or plate. Use fresh bread — day-old bread tears under peanut butter.
  2. Stir 2 tbsp of smooth peanut butter in the jar until loose and glossy, then spread it over the whole face of one slice with a butter knife, right out to the crust in an even layer. Season with 1 pinch of salt if your peanut butter is unsalted.
  3. Wipe the knife clean, then spread 1.5 tbsp of grape jelly over the second slice in a thin, even layer, stopping about 5 mm short of the crust so it does not squeeze out when pressed. The peanut butter layer acts as a seal against the jelly soaking the bread.
